Roof stains are commonly attributed to mold growth, but those dark streaks are usually due to a very common type of algae. Which is good news for you as a homeowner, because algae is a lot easier to get rid of and keep at bay.
What NOT to do: Use quick-fix, harsh chemicals.
Let’s be clear: while you can use harsh chemical cleaners and pressure washers to easily stop algae growth from your roof, we do not recommend it.
If the chemicals are harsh enough to eliminate algae without professional intervention, they’re harsh enough to erode the protective coating on your roof. Chemical cleaners are also unkind to the environment. While “greener” cleaners like oxygen bleach are out there, they aren’t as effective for getting rid of roof stains.
Elite Clean uses the best eco-friendly cleaners in the industry and shingles-friendly low-pressure cleaning technology to boost your curb appeal and protect your home without damaging your roof.
For the homeowner in the market for a new roof, DO: Invest in algae-resistant shingles.
Algae thrives in humid areas and spreads by feeding on the limestone in your roof shingles. Take a look at your roof: are there any areas left unscathed by algae growth around your chimney or metal vents?
The zinc coating applied to roof metals is toxic to algae, so as rain washes across the roof around metal installations, the metallic solutions kill and prevent algae growth. If you’re in the market for a new roof, have algae-resistant shingles installed. These shingles are made with copper granules that stop algae growth and last longer in humid climates than standard shingles.
With yearly professional cleaning, they’ll last longer and stay in tip-top shape.
While harsh chemical cleaners will temporarily banish algae (along with bits ‘n’ pieces of your roof), it will inevitably grow back. Stop algae in its tracks by installing zinc or copper strips along the top of your roof and let Mother Nature do the rest.
Rain will wash trace amounts of zinc or copper solution from the strips across your roof and defend your shingles against algae by coating them with algae-banishing metallics. While they’re tough on algae, they’re much safer for your roof, your family, and the environment than chemical washes.
Just keep in mind, although metal strips can help keep algae at bay throughout the year, there’s no substitute for professional cleaning.
